Plasterers:

• Aligning of Walls & Ceilings
• Mix and apply plaster and cement to walls and ceilings
• Ensure plaster is level and smooth using various techniques
• Estimate the quantity of materials needed
• Plan plasterboard layout from onsite evaluation
• Install plasterwork

The number of years expected to complete this apprenticeship is between three and four years.

Fibrous plasterers are employed by plastering subcontracting firms, building and construction companies and businesses that manufacture plaster products. Many plasterers are self employed and work on a subcontract basis. The demand for fibrous plasterers depends on activity in the building industry, in particular the housing sector. It is a large occupation with good prospects.

Demand is subject to changes in building activity. Qualified tradespeople are less likely to be affected by downturns in demand.

The current Certificate III qualification for Wall and Ceiling Lining requires students to successfully complete 26 units of competency to achieve the credential. Of these 26 units, 19 are compulsory and a further seven elective units.

Fees for these units vary. Students are also expected to cover the cost of clothing, equipment, safety glasses, tools and other materials.

This trade is linked to the Queensland skills shortage, and additional funding benefits may apply for employers.
