What does a Plasterer actually do?
A Plasterer applies plaster to interior and exterior ceilings and walls of buildings. These can be plain or decorative surfaces that are sound resistant, weather proof and fire resistant.
Creating smooth or textured finishes, Plasterers install prefabricated plaster veneer or derive ornamental designs for interesting effects.
What are some of the skills I would learn at BIGA?
At BIGA, we will equip you with the practical and theoretical skills and knowledge necessary to be a successful Plasterer. Some of the skills you will learn include:
- Mixing and applying plaster and cement to walls and ceilings
- Ensuring plaster is level and smooth using various techniques
- Estimating quantity of materials needed
- Render exterior walls and moulds
- Plan plasterboard layout from onsite evaluation
- Install plasterwork
What does a Plastering apprenticeship involve?
At BIGA, we equip you with on-the-job training, conducted by experienced tradespeople on site and within the classroom. This ensures you develop the technical and practical skills to be effective in your chosen trade. Number of years expected to complete your apprenticeship: 3 - 4 yrs.
What do I need to be a good Plasterer?
- Ability to work at heights
- Liking of using tools and various equipment
- Attention to detail and desire to complete a precise job
- Strength and stamina to move and utilise heavy tools and various materials
- A good sense of balance
What working conditions can I expect?
- Standard full-time 5 day working week, averaging 40 hours, with some overtime expected on weekends in order to complete certain projects
- Those working for themselves generally work longer hours
- Work is primarily indoors
- Work can be in confined spaces and in damp and dusty conditions
- Travel is required between job sites
- Continual lifting of materials and equipment
- Salaries range between $35,000 - $60,000 plus
- A national shortage of plasterers exists
