What does a Painter actually do?

A Painter creates the atmosphere of a room or building. Painters apply not only paint, but wallpaper, varnish and other finishes to protect, maintain and decorate interior and exterior surfaces. A Painter can work on domestic, commercial and industrial buildings and other structures.

A painter can also offer advice on colours, combinations and products.

What are some of the skills I would learn at BIGA?

At BIGA, we will equip you with the practical and theoretical skills and knowledge necessary to be a successful Painter. Some of the skills you will learn include:

  • Assessing various worksites, repairing surfaces and preparing materials
  • Applying products to surfaces with great care and attention to detail
  • Using tool and appliances safely
  • Identifying hazardous materials
  • Selecting and preparing paints to match colours by the addition of tinters
  • Business skills to allow you to calculate quantity of materials and labour required, applying cost estimates for projects
  • Working alongside other professionals to ensure the best possible result i.e. designers, architects, engineers, carpenters

What does a Painting apprenticeship involve?

At BIGA, we equip you with on-the-job training, conducted by experienced tradespeople on site and within the classroom. This ensures you develop the technical and practical skills to be effective in your chosen trade.  Number of years expected to complete your apprenticeship: 3 - 4 yrs.

What do I need to be a good Painter?

  • An ability to work individually AND as part of a team
  • Reasonable physical fitness
  • Good with heights
  • Attention to detail

What working conditions can I expect?

  • Standard full-time 5 day working week with some overtime expected over weekends to complete certain projects
  • Indoors and outdoor environments
  • Working as part of a team or individually to complete a project on time and within budget
  • Starting annual salary for painters and decorators is about $35,000 through to $70,000 for those with more experience
  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Working with arms over heads
  • Sometimes lifting materials up to 25kg
  • Working from ladders or heights
