An Auto Mechanic or Motor Mechanic is a mechanic who specialises in automobile maintenance, repair and sometimes modification.
Mechanics may be knowledgeable in and work on all parts of a range of car makes, or may choose to specialise. Diagnosing mechanical problems can be the most challenging yet rewarding aspect of car repair. Based on the diagnosis, mechanics supply their clients with price quotes and commence work using electrical and hand held tools.
What are some of the skills I would learn at BIGA?
At BIGA, we will equip you with the practical and theoretical skills and knowledge necessary to be a successful Auto Mechanic. Some of the skills you will learn include:
- The ability to apply basic automotive troubleshooting processes
- Inspect and service engines, steering, suspension systems etc
- Select materials and tools based on assessment of vehicle
- Use and maintain a variety of hand held and electrical tools

What does an apprenticeship as an Auto Mechanic involve?
At BIGA, we equip you with on-the-job training, conducted by experienced tradespeople on site and within the classroom. This ensures you develop the technical and practical skills necessary to be effective in your chosen trade. Number of years expected to complete your apprenticeship: 3 - 4 yrs.
What do I need to be a good Auto Mechanic?
- Good with hands
- A liking of practical and manual work
- Problem-solving skills
- Able to work with hand tools
- Normal eyesight and hearing
- Reasonable strength and fitness
What working conditions can I expect?
- Standard full-time 5 day working week, averaging 40 hours, with some overtime expected on weekends in order to complete certain projects
- Salary ranges between $30,000 - $50,000 plus, particularly for those owning their own business
- Auto Mechanics must always be on the lookout for hazards and be safety conscious
- Working conditions differ greatly with both indoor and outdoor work opportunities
- Required to keep up with changes in motor industry technology
- Job opportunities exist in motor vehicle dealers, repairers, service stations, defence, energy, public works, transport, private firms etc

- It is a broad occupation and employment prospects are strong
